The Role of Open Source in Kingdom Building

Over the past two years, I’ve built six servers—each designed with purpose, precision, and prayer. Two of them now serve a local church community, supporting everything from media streaming to secure networking. A third server is nearly ready to be donated to another congregation.

These efforts come from a belief that open source technology, especially in the hands of the mission-minded, can be a powerful vehicle for the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Why Open Source?

Ubuntu Linux has been my operating system of choice. It’s stable, secure, and free—key traits for ministries operating on tight budgets. Open source tools empower churches and mission projects to:

Host websites, media libraries, or learning platforms.

Provide public WiFi access with captive portals and filtered content.

Stream worship services to underserved areas.

Build custom apps or databases for ministry needs.

And because the source code is open, the technology becomes not just a product—but a ministry in itself: teachable, shareable, and sustainable.

Mission by Design

When we think of missions, we often envision travel, preaching, and community outreach. But the infrastructure that supports mission is just as important.

Imagine:

A Bible study app built and hosted by the local church.

A WiFi hotspot in a remote village delivering spiritual content offline.

A church office running on donated hardware, maintained by volunteers.

A secure video server hosting worship content where YouTube is blocked or unavailable.

These aren’t just dreams—they're possibilities within reach using open source tools.

A Growing Community?

I’m writing this to ask: Are there others out there doing this?

Are you a developer, sysadmin, network engineer, or tech enthusiast using your skills for the Kingdom of God? Have you built something similar, or are you interested in starting?

If so, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s find ways to collaborate, share knowledge, or even create a global open source mission toolkit.
